What are you currently working on?
"I'm working on a high angle of attack project right now that is my favorite so far. It's really exciting to purposely put the airplane out of control and figure out what happens next."
What's the hottest project you've ever worked on?
"The hottest, most advanced project I've worked with is the Targeting Pod. I was concerned with what it does when it's hanging on the airplane and what makes it stay in control longer than any of the other previous versions did."
How does it feel to work with fighter pilots?
"Working here, you're very closely involved with the fighter pilots. You become good friends with them. We travel with them a lot, they have a personality all their own. Then you get to sit in a brief and you get to tell them what to do. That's kind of neat."
What was your most exciting day, so far?
"My most exciting time here was when we were executing high angle of attack testing. We were putting airplanes in control and telling the pilots what to do. That was our goal everyday. It was a lot of fun."
What kind of training did you receive?
"My high angle of attack testing was very hands-on training. We went into the control room with the pilots for what our goal was going to be when we were doing the testing."
Tell us a little about starting out at Edwards.
"When you first get here, you do a lot of reading of regulations. Once you start working on a project with your team, you get regular access to the technical experts, so you're not really on your own. You get to take responsibilities for things, but there's always someone there to help you."
What is the atmosphere at Edwards like?
"The atmosphere here is very friendly and it's very young. There are a lot of young engineers who are hired. People are always inviting you to hang out, so it's very easy to make friends here."
Why choose Edwards?
"If you took aerospace engineering in college, if you like airplanes, and if you want to work with airplanes, and you want to work with the newest and the fastest- Edwards is a great place to come to work. All the new aerospace technologies come here first. It's very exciting-you're right at the cutting-edge."
Tell us about the cutting-edge technology at Edwards.
"You do a lot of testing on new avionics systems. I can't go into too much detail about what they do, but it's the top of the line stuff, that gets tested here first. We schedule test flights for every program and basically, in your planning, you'll figure what you need, then you'll have a period of time where you'll test execution. There'll be a couple of weeks all you do is test flights every other day. It keeps you pretty busy."
What's available for recreation?
"What Edwards is…some people call it the middle-of-nowhere, others call it the middle-of-everything. There are lots of things to do around here, such as go to the mountains and we do a lot of off-roading in the mountains on the weekends. Vegas is only a short drive away and the beach is in L.A. It's an awesome location."
How does it feel to meet the everyday heroes at Edwards?
"There's a lot of history here at Edwards. It's neat to be a part of that. I met Chuck Yeager when I got here. So it's neat that these people that you've heard about, that are like heroes, are just everyday people. You come out here and you have the opportunity to meet them, and they are here all the time. The Rutan brothers work out here, and I have friends who've hung out at their houses."
What are some of the advantages of working for the DoD?
"Working for the DoD is exciting, especially now, with the war on terror going on-you know you're making a difference."
